In 2014, he supported Russia’s annexation of the Ukrainian Crimea.

Known for his anti-Ukrainian beliefs, he denies the right of Ukraine to exist as a separate state, claims that “Kiev and the whole of Ukraine are part of single great Russia.”

In 2022, he supported Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and signed an appeal by Russian writers in support of the war. He supported massive attacks on Ukrainian power plants.

On October 19, 2022, due to the support of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, he was included into the Ukrainian sanction list as a person “who publicly call for an aggressive war, justify and recognize as legitimate the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, the temporary occupation of the territory of Ukraine”."
